Speech, Language and Communication - Referrals

There is a new method of referring to speech and language therapy.  Please see below information from Swansea Bay Health Authority's Speech and Language Therapy Department.

The way we receive Speech and Language Therapy referrals for school-age children has changed (this includes part-time school nursery). From 5th January 2026, parent/carers/schools or anyone who wants to request help for a school-age child in the Swansea and Neath Port Talbot area can contact us directly to arrange a telephone conversation with a speech and language therapist to support their concerns and query.

Please request help and advice for your child, or a child that you support, via this link: https://forms.office.com/Pages/ResponsePage.aspx?id=uChWuyjjgkCoVkM8ntyPrgCxNYPEMtVBv5Y_RToyHy1UQzU2TDFHNDNUUlNPNlNRT0k4M1dWUEVJRy4u

Once we have this information, we will contact you to arrange a telephone conversation.

Please get in touch if you are concerned about a child about any of the following:

· understanding and/or use of words and sentences

· how clearly they say words

· do they stammer, get stuck on or repeat the same sound in words?

Who can request a telephone appointment?

Anyone! We want to speak to the person who is concerned – this may be the parent/carer, the school, another professional such as paediatrician or audiologist, or the young person themselves.

What happens next?

First, complete the digital form via the link above.

We will contact you to offer you a 20-minute telephone slot with a speech and language therapist. During the telephone call we will ask you about the following:

  •  What is your main worry?
  •   How this effects the child in their everyday life – at home, in school and with their friends?
  •  What you and other people e.g. school, childcare, family are already doing to help?
  • How do you think we can help?

Make sure you are ready for this telephone appointment by preparing answers to the above questions.

Together we will decide the next steps, which may be:

  • Signposting to other relevant teams, services or groups
  • Advice and strategies to go use
  • Helpful websites and resources
  • Information sessions or training
  • School based support
  • Specialist assessment and/or intervention

If you are unable to access the digital form, then please contact us on 01792 517862.

If you have a query about a child that is currently known to the Speech and Language Therapy team, please contact us at sbu.childrensspeechtherapy@wales.nhs.uk  and include the child’s name and date of birth.
